Carnival Sunrise has officially returned to the Caribbean following a $200 million renovation.

The ship is sailing a range of four- to 14-day Caribbean voyages throughout the season, with the first four coming out of Norfolk’s Decker Half Moone Cruise Center.

“The introduction of Carnival Sunrise brings an incredibly enhanced ship to our guests with all of the popular features from across our fleet,” said Christine Duffy, president of Carnival Cruise Line.  “We couldn’t be more proud to introduce Carnival Sunrise in Norfolk.”

The renovation added a variety of food, beverage and entertainment innovations, as well as stateroom upgrades.

New casual food and beverage options include Guy’s Burger Joint and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, in collaboration with Food Network star and longtime partner Guy Fieri; BlueIguana Cantina & Tequila Bar; RedFrog Rum Bar; as well as upgrades to the Lido Marketplace; an expanded ice cream station; the Java Blue coffee bar and 24-hour Pizzeria del Capitano.

New specialty dining options include The Chef’s Table fine dining experience, the cocktail pharmacy-themed Alchemy Bar, as well as Italian, sushi and seafood options.

The News and Times of Puerto Rico: This Jamaica Hotel Has a Hurricane Guarantee

By Dana Niland
CJ Contributor

Hurricane season is almost upon us, and one Jamaica hotel is continuing its special storm protection for travelers.

The Holiday Inn Resort Montego Bay has reinstated its annual Hurricane Guarantee for 2019.

Valid for resort stays enjoyed throughout the entire 2019 Atlantic hurricane season (May 1 to November 30, 2019), the program provides consumer purchase protection against possible travel disruption due to hurricanes.

“Memories of past very active hurricane seasons remain fresh, not only on the minds of those of us living in the Caribbean, but also among those who love traveling to the region,” said Nicola Madden-Greig, Group Director of Marketing and Sales at the property. “Our annual Hurricane Guarantee puts the minds of our guests at ease, ensuring that they can enjoy the best of Jamaica throughout the summer and well into the fall with confidence.”

The guarantee provides both pre- and mid-vacation safeguards.

Guests holding confirmed reservations with nonrefundable deposits who are unable to travel due to the closure of Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport caused by a Category One or higher hurricane can rebook their reservations for a future resort stay without penalty.

A one-category room upgrade will also be provided based on space availability.

Should a Category One or higher hurricane interrupt resort operations for more than 24 hours, guests already on property will receive a certificate valid for a free future stay.

The News and Times of Puerto Rico: Marriott Is Launching Luxury Villa Rentals in the Caribbean

By the Caribbean Journal staff

The world’s biggest hotel company is getting into the home sharing business.

In a move that enters Marriott in a market dominated by home sharing giant Airbnb, the company has launched a new “Homes & Villas by Marriott International” program that includes the Caribbean market.

“The launch of Homes & Villas by Marriott International reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation as consumer travel needs evolve,” said Stephanie Linnartz, Global Chief Commercial Officer, Marriott International. “What started out as a pilot a year ago is now a global offering, providing our guests with the space and amenities of a home backed by a trusted travel company, and the very best in loyalty benefits.”

The program, which will focus on “premium and luxury homes” in more than 100 destinations worldwide, will also see members of Marriott’s Bonvoy rewards program able to earn and redeem points at the “highly-curated” homes.

The launch comes after Marriott developed the home rental program in a 2018 pilot initiative under the brand Tribute Portfolio Homes.

And the Caribbean launch will focus on luxury destinations, too, the company said, with a launch in St Barth and Anguilla, among other stops.

The Anguilla launch, for example, includes an oceanfront villa with a private beach and a personal butler.

And while it’s hard to ignore the presence of Airbnb, the luxury focus means Marriott’s biggest competition could potentially be Airbnb’s luxury sub-brand, Luxury Retreats.

Marriott is launching the program with “select property management companies that are already managing these homes,” it said.

Anguilla will also be one of Marriott’s first home rental markets.

“Our approach to home rentals allows us to curate an incredible collection of homes that deliver an elevated travel experience,” said Jennifer Hsieh, Vice President, Homes & Villas by Marriott International. “By working with a select group of professional management companies that understand and operate in this dynamic landscape, we are able to focus on what we do best – selecting a breadth of homes in inspiring destinations, setting standards for responsive service and designing a seamless booking experience that helps our guests navigate an increasingly complex and uncertain set of home rental choices.”

Marriott also said the Homes & Villas program would be the setting for experiences exclusively available to members by using their points on “Marriott Bonvoy Moments.”

That includes events like gourmet cooking, barbecues and tours.

The launch will officially take place next week with a searchable home database.

Puerto Rico Report: The “McKinsey Way” in Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico’s Financial Oversight and Management Board (FOMB) is facing a number of challenges right now, from ongoing conflict with the territorial government to a legal ruling declaring the board unconstitutional. They’re relying on advice from management consulting firm McKinsey & Company. The consulting firm sees Puerto Rico’s troubles as “a management crisis brought to a head by debt.”

Puerto Rico had, according to McKinsey, “engaged in a wide variety of destructive borrowing behaviors.” Growing debt was shored up by tax tricks that washed money through Puerto Rico’s economy without providing jobs or maintaining infrastructure. Creative accounting made the budget look balanced, but gaps between income and outgo were bridged by further debt. Puerto Rico’s tax-free bonds were downgraded to junk status, and a mysterious loophole in the bankruptcy code prevented Puerto Rico from declaring bankruptcy. Some hedge funds saw that as an opportunity. “It looked,” according to The Intelligencer, “as if the bondholders could seize tax revenues or assets belonging to the island and no one could stop them.”

It was like a game of hot potato, and bondholders left holding the spud saw aggressive pursuit of their payments as their best solution. Puerto Rico’s governor stated simply that Puerto Rico could not pay the debt, and the territory defaulted.

President Obama and Congress came up with a law called PROMESA that created a Financial Oversight and Management Board (FOMB) to help Puerto Rico restructure debts and get better fiscal control. Bondholders lobbied against PROMESA and Puerto Rico leaders generally supported it at the time. The board hired McKinsey, and the consultants got to work identifying cost-cutting opportunities for the Island.

The McKinsey Way, a term used by the firm and also the title of a book detailing the organization’s philosophy, refers to the use of hard data to create hypotheses about how to solve problems. Puerto Rico had limited data about its resources and expenditures, and the consultants started by drilling into the records in every office.

The Intelligencer suggests that hiring consultants allowed the board to avoid hiring a staff which might look like a parallel government. Instead, teams of short-term consultants with varying backgrounds provide expertise designed to reduce expenses.

With a focus on austerity for Puerto Rico rather than reducing obligations to creditors, the FOMB and McKinsey met with resistance from leaders and residents in Puerto Rico. McKinsey has holdings of at least $20 million in Puerto Rico bonds through a subsidiary. An independent investigation held that the investment is separate from the consulting company, which is expected to receive a large chunk of the $1.5 billion the Island is spending on consultants to help them through the debt crisis.

The House Natural Resources Committee will hold a hearing this week on the austerity measures being imposed by the FMOB.
